The mUSLIM mIYAZAKI sERIES

SEASON 1

MMS 1

The Origin

Studio Ghibli introduced me to so many worlds, so I wanted to return the favor and introduce them to mine...

Introducing the Muslim Miyazaki Series

A series inspired by Studio Ghibli movies but infused with Muslim storylines. These films have always been an integral part of my childhood. Wonder and beauty in the simplest things were at the core of each of these films. Something about that simplicity has taught me to find the beauty in every aspect of this life.

“The wANDERERS”

A small group of men and women traveling through the Saharan deserts. Where are they trying to go? Who are they trying to find?

MMS 3

“The Daily Routine”

A Dua for our parents. Our mothers who teach us how to stand on our own. Our fathers who provide for us. What cherished memories do we have of your parents? As someone privileged with both parents, I have realized it is truly the mundane and daily tasks where the love is shown the most. Folding laundry, eating dinner, gardening are all simple house chores where their true affection for you seeps through.

“The Rooftop”

Somewhere on the Bosphorus, there’s a rooftop she loves to escape to and think. Sometimes she just wants to be alone, other times she wants to disappear just long enough until someone notices she’s gone.

SEASON 2

MMS 1

“The Wolven Warriors”

As Princess Mononoke, San, grew older she took upon two apprentices. These sisters learned the ways of the mountains and rivers. They became the new protectors of the forest and helpless peoples. They both have their own wolf spirits that they ride throughout the lands. The sisters have chosen this life of nomadic travel, aiding the oppressed wherever they may be...
.
Time and time again I see women wearing the niqab being labeled as submissive, oppressed, weak, and other sad statements. I have met many women who adorn the niqab from my own family to new friends I’ve met a long the way. This is a decision they have made. I wanted to flip the script. These two sisters embody the spirit of all the women I have met. They are courageous and caring. They are intelligent and strong. And just as Allah(swt) has written they are there to defend the helpless and uplift Islam.

the nikkah.jpg

“The Nikkah”

Inspired from Kikis delivery, marriage in Islam is a very simple process. Acceptance and reciprocity of love in the union is all that is required for it to be required. May all the newly weds have blessed marriages Ameen

(This was a lovely commission that was approved to be posted 😇)

disparity.jpg

“The Disparity”

Inspired from Grave of the Fireflies, I wanted to highlight that even though we had quite a “victory” stateside, the work is not even close to finished. Our brothers and sisters overseas have still not found peace... Their strength and resilience is awe inspiring. We must pray for their peace and safety everyday, but we must also WORK. We must take action and initiative. Many of us have the privilege of our voices, if not our capital. Now that we may have a government that could be receptive to change, it’s important now more than ever that we don’t stop working towards the goal of peace and equality.

the call.jpg

“The call”

The world we live is full of test and tribulations. Especially now with a global pandemic, we are one call away from getting heart-shattering news. Islam was not brought down only to those who were happy, rich, and well off in life. This religion encompasses the good and the bad that this world has to offer. It is meant to be an embrace even in the darkest of times. Even when you think you are alone... Allah is closer to you than your jugular vein.
